What's the Best Way to Prepare for Advancement?

by Robbie Miller Kaplan

Will you successfully find and keep employment in the new millennium? You
will if you become a lifelong learner, acquiring skills that keep pace with changes in technology and the needs of the workplace.

The new year is a good time to assess your skills and position yourself for your next move. Determine any existing areas that could use some improvement or identify ways to broaden your opportunities with new skills.

Oral and written communication, computer, leadership, and language skills continue to be in high demand. Any of these or a combination will enhance your current experience and make you a more desirable candidate for future positions.

Learning has never been easier with a wide variety of methods to fit your schedule and budget. You can locate a multitude of instruction from formal classes to instruction through online, correspondence, video, cassette, CD, book, tutorial, or teleconferencing offerings.

Acquiring skills takes discipline, motivation, and time. Skills aren't developed simply by attending or participating in learning opportunities. You have to study, apply the information, and practice, practice, practice!

Affiliation with professional organizations can foster specific skills (such as speaking through Toastmasters or computer skills through user groups) while allowing you the all important time to practice and build your skill.

Use your imagination in pinpointing opportunities to help your present
organization while strengthening your credentials. It may be as simple as learning how to use the Internet or a desktop publishing, database, or presentation software program. Or developing technical writing, editing, or public relations skills. Would you like to work in the global economy? Try your hand at e-commerce? Or take a lead on your management team? It's possible to achieve any of these objectives with proper learning. Just add a skill to your new years resolutions and you'll be on your way.
