How Will Your Resume Be Evaluated?

by  Robbie Miller Kaplan

Employers have jobs to fill and before they review your resume, they must first establish criteria for the evaluation. The criteria is culled from the job description, desired qualifications, and preferred qualifications and relates to education, experience, certifications, affiliations, and skills job candidates need to perform the basic job requirements.

Every hiring manager uses their own unique approach when tackling a stack of resumes. Some assume that job candidates include information of least importance at the end of a resume so they scan from the bottom up. Others know the most important information is stated first and since it is difficult to read resumes backwards, they scan from top to bottom.

Employers sort resumes into different piles based on good fit, maybe, save for other openings, or no interest. Use the following suggestions to get your resume into the good fit pile.

  1. Detail what you consider to be the key qualifications and draw up a list of key words to use in your resume.
  2. Communication skills are crucial in this business environment. Make sure your resume is error-free with no typing, spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.
  3. Craft descriptive statements stating the scope, depth, and breadth of your responsibilities and detailing your industry and organization.
  4. Clearly state your accomplishments, contributions, problems solved, how you solved them, and the results.
  5. Identify specific skills in your opening summary, skills section, and wherever relevant in the experience descriptions.

Resumes are your best chance to get a second glance.
