Tips to Maintaining Your Career Records

by Robbie Miller Kaplan

There is nothing worse than learning about a wonderful job opportunity when your resume is outdated. While it is wise to update your resume annually, if you're like most individuals - you don't. But, an updated career file can help you to quickly assemble an accurate, accomplishment-oriented resume or help you demonstrate why you deserve a promotional opportunity.

Choose a convenient location to store your file and use either a hanging file, manila folders, or pocket folders. Store job descriptions, performance evaluations, monthly and annual performance reports, standards of performance, letters of commendation, job announcements and/or classified employment advertisements (yours or similar positions), training certificates of completion, continuing education units (CEUs), certifications, and copies of licenses or updates. Any item which describes what you have accomplished, what you've contributed, or how you have performed or ranked should be a part of your career record.

Make a New Years commitment to keep your files accessible and updated to prepare for career challenges and opportunities.
