How Important is a Cover Letter?

by Robbie Miller Kaplan

Cover letters are a crucial component of the job search and they work as a partner with your resume to market you to prospective employers. While resumes demonstrate how you meet overall job requirements, cover letters target how your qualifications directly match the job requirements of a specific organization. Cover letters offer you the opportunity to pull out prior experience, skills, and accomplishments not included in your resume that highlight why you are the perfect applicant for the job. You can also personalize your cover letters to convince a prospective employer of how and why this position ties into your personal interest, passion, or long-range career goals. If you put as much time and effort into your cover letters as your resume, you're sure to expedite your job search.
