How to Start a Job Search?

by  Robbie Miller Kaplan

Most individuals plan to prepare or update their resume as the first step in a job search. But, prior to preparing a resume you need to plan what type of job you will pursue and identify what are the key job requirements for the position. This research is crucial if you are to craft a resume that will capture an employer's attention. A resume's purpose is to attract potential employers and you do this by demonstrating that you meet their job requirements. All of the experiences, skills, education, and training should support your job goal and clearly signify that you are qualified candidate. What if you don't have all the job requirements? You can either pursue additional training, skills, or credentials and indicate that in your resume (where appropriate) or in a cover letter. Or, you can highlight the qualifications that most closely match the desired credentials and outline in your cover letter you interest, passion, or desire for the job and how you will make a worthy addition or a contribution.
